The project consists of the establishment of a germplasm collection, with characterisation and conservation activities, aimed at determining and describing the genetic make-up of the olive species in participating countries, and at including every different genotype in each of the 15 national germplasm banks of the participating countries as well as in two international germplasm banks, one of which is to be situated in a Maghreb country. The participating 15 countries include EC member countries and non European countries such as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia. The CFC project is meant to allow the five non EC countries to fully participate in this major germplasm collection exercise.
