The project by ProDev, Rwanda, intends to invest in a soya processing plant to produce soya cake and soybean oil. Soya cake produced will be used to expand animal feed production by buyers across Eastern and Central Africa. Soybean oil will be sold to supermarkets in Rwanda and neighbouring countries. The project targets to involve up to 2,000 soya farmers, in the next 7 years, and provide such farmers access to certified seed and fertilizers, guaranteed offtake and floor prices, trainings about soya benefits and cultivation, and facilitate access to credit and crop insurance. The project expects to generate 147 jobs and improve the market structure and control over the soya value chain in the country. The project will have a positive step forward to develop the supply chain from ‘farm-to-market’.
- Income increase from USD 327 to USD 1,920 per annum, generating a total gain of up to USD 3.2 million
- Increase yield from 0.8 MT to 2.0 MT per hectare
- Creation of 147 jobs; up to 70% such employees will be women
The project aims to have a positive impact on the environment through training of farmers in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Environmental Impact Assessment of the soya processing plant.
