The project aimed at maintaining and improving coconut production, in particular by small-holders, through control of coconut Lethal Yellowing disease. Coconut cultivars from all major coconut growing regions were introduced and screened to identify and deploy germ plasm with high lethal yellowing resistance and acceptable yield. Robust methods for phytoplasma detection, characterization and quantification were developed. In addition, work was carried out on possible control options by advancing and applying knowledge on disease epidemiology, spread/transmission and phytosanitary measures. Coconut farmers in outbreak areas participated in efforts to find sources of resistance and cultural control methods. Immediate elimination of palms showing symptoms of Lethal Yellowing, replanting whenever possible with more than one cultivar and proper weed control gave good results.

In Farmer Field Schools, information was shared with male and female farmers for disease management and improved coconut production. The project strengthened international collaboration among fourteen institutions in nine countries working on coconut lethal yellowing and related diseases. The project was completed in 2013. The Final Report presents the results of this project.
