High quality cocoa from communities - Colombia
Cafexport’s cocoa trading business was established in 2012 under the brand name Colcocoa to export fully traceable and certified sustainable cocoa beans. At the time, Cafexport was already exporting coffee to major corporate buyers. With the support of the CFC, Cafexport sought to expand its cocoa trading activities and cocoa production in Colombia. To support this expansion, the CFC committed both a trade finance facility and an investment loan.
The investment was undertaken to contribute to the scaling up of sustainable and traceable cocoa production while promoting environmentally responsible practices such as agroforestry and reforestation, thereby supporting biodiversity conservation. The project aims to reach more than 1,500 additional smallholders and provide them with off-take opportunities to significantly increase their incomes. It is anticipated that beneficiary farmers will achieve additional income gains of approximately USD 1,900 per year, while improved agronomic practices will support higher yields and enhanced food security. The project will also expand the area under improved management to more than 6,000 hectares. In a region with limited formal employment opportunities, employment is expected to increase to 85 permanent jobs over five years, with 40% of these positions held by women, offering an average annual income of approximately USD 5,940 per job
