Sudan Explores Opportunities to Bring More Projects to CFC

The Hague, 3 March 2026 – Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed Belal, Managing Director of the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Ms. Omaima M.A. Alsharief, Governor of the CFC for the Republic of Sudan and Chargé d’Affaires a.i., at the Embassy of Sudan in The Hague. Also present was Mrs. Rasha Beshir Ahmed Yousif, Agriculture Consultant at the Embassy of Sudan.

The meeting focused on exploring avenues to bring more projects from Sudan to the CFC, particularly in areas of food security, agricultural development, and sustainable value chains. Ambassador Belal emphasized that collaboration with the CFC is crucial to ensuring the long-term sustainability of projects in Sudan. By combining technical expertise, capacity-building support, and access to structured financing, CFC-backed initiatives can strengthen local institutions, improve farm productivity, and enhance resilience against climate and market risks.

He highlighted that such support enables projects to move beyond short-term interventions, fostering lasting impact for smallholder farmers, rural communities, and the broader Sudanese agricultural sector. The discussion also explored potential collaboration with Sudanese authorities and partners to ensure that new initiatives are well-integrated, scalable, and capable of delivering meaningful socio-economic and environmental benefits over the long term.

H.E. Ms. Omaima M.A. Alsharief expressed appreciation for the Managing Director’s continued engagement with Member States and his strong commitment to supporting countries facing development challenges. She noted that Sudan values the CFC’s practical approach to strengthening commodity value chains and expressed hope that Sudanese institutions and partners will be able to work closely with the CFC to develop impactful projects that benefit farmers and rural communities.

Both sides welcomed further technical consultations to identify concrete project proposals and pathways that enhance food systems, promote climate-smart agricultural practices, and strengthen value-chain resilience in Sudan.
